Maestro Louis Welcher

Louis Welcher gained international recognition following studies with Richard Brothers, Betty Jean Chipman, and Martial Singer.  Performing in 12 countries over 35 years, he soloed with conductors including Rilling, Shaw, Wagner, and Abravanel.  The heldentenor has sung 23 leading operatic roles in Europe and the States.

Professor Welcher served Crowder and Westmont Colleges and the University of Utah.  Former students now sing in professional choirs, on Broadway, in European and domestic opera houses, and are successful educators.

Mr. Welcher was national winner of the MTNA Competition, and has won prizes from the New York Concert Artists’ Guild, and the Lotte Lehman and Naumberg Foundations.  His scholarly works have been published by the ACDA’s “Choral Journal”.

Maestro Welcher served as director and conductor of the Festival Chorale from the Fall of 2002 through Spring 2005.

Now in retirement from his work as a professional musician, the “singing chef” is now able to continue his life-long dedication to the mentoring of young people.  However, he freely admits that his favorite occupation is that of being a grandfather.
